The 3 things killing your lawn (that nobody talks about)
Most people's lawns look mid for the same 3 reasons. None of them have to do with "not watering enough."
1. You're mowing too short.
Everyone thinks shorter = cleaner. Wrong. When you scalp your grass below 3 inches, you stress the roots, invite weeds, and basically give the sun a free shot at baking your soil. Set your mower to 3.5-4 inches. Your neighbors will ask what changed within 2 weeks.
2. You're feeding at the wrong time.
Throwing fertilizer down in July is like chugging coffee at midnight — it just stresses everything out. Cool-season grasses want food in early fall and early spring. Warm-season grasses want it in late spring. Timing > product.
3. You're ignoring your soil.
Your grass is only as good as what's underneath it. A $15 soil test from your local extension office will tell you exactly what's missing — pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. Most "bad lawns" are actually just lawns with bad soil that nobody bothered to test.
Fix these 3 things and you'll have a better lawn than 90% of your neighborhood without spending a fortune.
