The #1 mistake beginners make when learning Photoshop (and how to fix it)

Most people try to learn Photoshop by Googling specific tasks — "how to remove a background," "how to blur a photo."

That works once. But then you're stuck the next time you hit something different.

The real skill in Photoshop isn't memorizing tools. It's understanding how layers, masks, and adjustments work together — because once that clicks, you can figure out almost anything on your own.

Here's the order I teach it:

  1. Layers first — what they are, why they matter, how to think in layers

  2. Selections & masks — the foundation of every advanced edit

  3. Adjustment layers — non-destructive editing that keeps you in control

  4. Real projects — things you'd actually want to make, not fake exercises

If you've ever felt like Photoshop is "too complicated" — it's not. You just started in the wrong place.

That's what LayerUp is built around: giving beginners the right mental model from day one, so everything else starts to make sense.
