I've sourced sunglasses from 40+ factories. Here's what most new brands get wrong.
Most people starting a sunglasses brand jump straight to Alibaba, pick the cheapest factory, and order 500 units.
Three months later they're sitting on frames that snap at the hinge, lenses with visible distortion, and a "brand" nobody trusts.
Here's what actually matters when sourcing eyewear manufacturing:
MOQ isn't the whole picture. A factory quoting 200 MOQ but delivering inconsistent quality costs more than one quoting 500 with proper QC. Always ask for defect rate data.
Material matters more than you think. Cheap injection-molded frames look fine in photos but feel like toys in person. Acetate and Mazzucchelli sheets cost more but customers can feel the difference.
Sampling is non-negotiable. Never go to production without physical samples in hand. Digital renderings lie. Get 3-5 samples per style, test the hinges, check the weight, wear them in sunlight.
Shipping and customs will surprise you. Budget for 30-45 days door-to-door for ocean freight. Air freight eats your margins. And if you don't have your HS codes right, customs will hold your shipment.
The brands that win aren't the ones with the flashiest designs — they're the ones with reliable supply chains.
If you're launching a sunglasses line and want a sourcing partner who's done this dozens of times, LensBridge handles the entire factory-to-doorstep process.
