Why most bettors lose money on parlays (and how to fix it)

Most people treat parlays like lottery tickets. Stack 8 legs, pray, lose. Repeat.

Here's the thing โ€” parlays aren't inherently bad. The problem is how people build them.

The 3 mistakes I see every day:

  1. Too many legs. Every leg you add multiplies the house edge. A 2-leg parlay at -110 each has a ~27% implied probability. A 6-leg? Under 2%. You're fighting math.

  1. Correlated legs without knowing it. If you're taking the over AND a player prop for points in the same game, those outcomes aren't independent. The sportsbooks know this โ€” you don't.

  1. No bankroll management. Putting 10% of your roll on a +800 parlay isn't "high risk, high reward." It's just high risk.

What I do differently:

I focus on 2-3 leg parlays where I have a genuine edge on each individual pick. Every leg has to stand on its own. If I wouldn't bet it straight, it doesn't go in the parlay.

I cover NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS, and Cricket โ€” but I only play when I see value, not when I'm bored.

That's the whole game. Discipline over volume. Analysis over gut feelings.
