5 things I wish someone told me about having ADHD as a woman

I spent years thinking I was just lazy, disorganized, and "too emotional."

Turns out my brain was literally wired differently — and nobody bothered to mention it.

Here are 5 things that changed everything once I finally understood my ADHD:

1. You're not bad with money — your brain doesn't process "future consequences" the same way.

The average woman with ADHD pays $5,000+/year in what researchers call the "ADHD tax" — late fees, impulse buys, forgotten subscriptions, duplicate purchases. It's not a character flaw. It's a dopamine thing.

2. Your hormones are making your ADHD worse (and nobody talks about it).

Estrogen directly affects dopamine production. That's why your symptoms get worse before your period, after pregnancy, and during perimenopause. You're not imagining it.

3. Exercise is literally medication — but only certain types work.

30 minutes of the right exercise can boost dopamine and norepinephrine for 2-3 hours. That's the same mechanism as stimulant meds. But steady-state cardio on a treadmill? Your ADHD brain will revolt. You need novelty, intensity, and variation.

4. The "just use a planner" advice is gaslighting.

Traditional productivity systems were designed for neurotypical brains. When they don't work for you, you blame yourself instead of the system. ADHD brains need external structure, body doubling, micro-deadlines, and dopamine bridges — not a color-coded calendar.

5. You're not "too much" — you've been surviving in a world that wasn't designed for you.

Women with ADHD develop complex masking behaviors by age 12. We learn to perform "normal" so well that even doctors miss it. The average woman isn't diagnosed until age 36. That's decades of unnecessary shame.

I created a free guide that breaks all of this down — the science, the myths, the self-check — because I needed this resource years ago and it didn't exist.

If any of this hit different, grab it. It might change how you see yourself. 💜
