Why 'grammar-first' language learning fails travelers (and what actually works)

I spent years watching people grind through Duolingo streaks and college-style grammar courses, then freeze the second a taxi driver asks them a question in real life. The gap between 'studying a language' and 'using a language' is where almost everyone gets stuck.

Here's the pattern I kept seeing: people memorize verb conjugation tables before they can order a coffee. That's backwards if your goal is a trip abroad in 6 weeks, not a linguistics degree.

The fix that actually works is scenario-first learning — you learn the exact phrases you'll need for the exact situations you'll be in (airport, taxi, restaurant, small talk with a host family) and you practice them out loud, not silently in an app. Grammar comes later, as a byproduct of use, not a prerequisite for it.

That's the whole premise behind what I've been building at Linguo Academy — structured courses in Spanish, French, Japanese and more, organized by real situations instead of textbook chapters. If you're prepping for a move or a trip and grammar drills have never stuck for you, this approach might click differently.

Curious what's worked (or hasn't) for others here trying to get conversational fast.
