Why most AE gradients look flat (and how to fix it)
If you've ever tried making animated gradients in After Effects, you know the pain. You set up a gradient ramp, keyframe some colors, and it looks... fine. But not alive.
The problem is that most editors treat gradients as static color blends. Real-world gradients shift in hue, speed, and direction simultaneously. That's what makes them feel organic.
Here's what separates a flat gradient from a living one:
Hue rotation — Colors should cycle through the spectrum, not just fade between two fixed points
Variable speed — Different parts of the gradient should move at different rates
Directional flow — The gradient should feel like it's going somewhere, not just sitting there
I built Living Gradients because I got tired of manually keyframing all of this for every project. Now it takes seconds instead of hours.
If you're a motion designer making content for social, this will save you serious time.
