Why most beginners never actually look like they can dance (and how to fix it)
I've taught hip-hop to hundreds of beginners and the problem is almost always the same.
They learn moves. They don't learn groove.
Moves = copying a sequence of steps
Groove = moving with the music before a single move even starts
Every great dancer you've seen? It's not the footwork you're responding to โ it's the groove. The bounce. The way they're locked in before they do anything.
You can learn the Running Man in 10 minutes. But if your timing is off, it looks robotic every time.
The fix: before any move, just practice riding the beat. Pick a hip-hop track, stand still, find the 1 and the 3, let your knees bend. 5 minutes a day for a week and you'll already look different.
Groove before steps. That's what we build first at Locked In Dance.
