Why Your Beats Sound Quiet on Spotify (And How to Fix It)

If you've ever uploaded a beat to Spotify and wondered why it sounds quieter or thinner than everything else in the playlist — it's not your mix. It's your master.


The Problem


Spotify normalizes all audio to -14 LUFS integrated. If your master is sitting at -8 LUFS (which is common for loud hip-hop and trap beats), Spotify turns it down by about 6 dB. That volume reduction also exposes dynamics you couldn't hear before, making the track sound smaller and less punchy than it did in your DAW.


If your master is too quiet — say -18 LUFS — Spotify turns it up, but now you're amplifying noise floor and revealing a lack of energy.


Either way, you lose.


The Fix (Quick Version)


1. Aim for -14 LUFS integrated, -1 dBTP (true peak)


This is Spotify's normalization target. If you land here, Spotify applies zero gain change. Your master plays back exactly as you intended.


2. Use a true peak limiter, not a standard peak limiter


Standard peak limiters measure sample peaks, but inter-sample peaks (ISPs) can exceed 0 dBTP after codec conversion. A true peak limiter catches these. Set your ceiling to -1.0 dBTP to leave headroom for lossy encoding (Ogg Vorbis on Spotify, AAC on Apple Music).


3. Meter with the right tools


You need an integrated LUFS meter, not just peak or RMS. Free options:

  • Youlean Loudness Meter (free tier is solid)

  • dpMeter 3 by TB Software

  • MLoudnessAnalyzer by MeldaProduction (free bundle)


4. A/B against a commercial reference at matched loudness


Pull a reference track that lives in the same genre and sounds great on streaming. Level-match it to your master (not by feel — by LUFS) and compare. If your low end is thinner or your transients feel softer, address those in your mastering chain before touching the limiter ceiling.

SoundCloud doesn't normalize, so louder masters will sound louder there. But if your music lives on Spotify or Apple Music, optimize for those first.
