5 ingredients hiding in your skincare that dermatologists flag

Most people read "natural" on a label and stop there. Here's what's actually worth checking:

1. Fragrance (Parfum) — This single word can hide 50+ undisclosed chemicals. It's the #1 contact allergen in cosmetics. If a product lists "fragrance" without specifying what's in it, that's a red flag.

2. Methylisothiazolinone (MI) — A preservative banned in leave-on products across the EU but still showing up in US products. Linked to allergic contact dermatitis.

3. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) — Not dangerous per se, but it strips your skin barrier. If you have eczema, rosacea, or sensitive skin, this is likely making it worse.

4. Formaldehyde releasers — Look for DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, or quaternium-15. These slowly release formaldehyde as a preservative strategy.

5. Oxybenzone — Common in chemical sunscreens. It's an endocrine disruptor that absorbs into your bloodstream. Hawaii banned it for killing coral reefs.

The problem isn't that these ingredients exist — it's that most people have no idea they're in their products.

That's why I built Lumens. It's an AI-powered ingredient scanner that reads any skincare label and tells you exactly what you're putting on your skin — flagging harmful chemicals, allergens, and irritants in seconds.

No chemistry degree required.

5 Ingredients Hiding in Your Skincare That You'd Never Put There on Purpose

Most people trust labels. But labels are designed to confuse you.

Here are 5 ingredients that show up in products marketed as "clean" and "gentle" — and what they actually do:

1. Methylisothiazolinone — A preservative banned in leave-on products across the EU since 2016. Still shows up in wash-off products and some US formulations. Known skin sensitizer.

2. Fragrance (Parfum) — This single word can hide 3,000+ chemical compounds. Brands aren't required to disclose what's inside. It's the #1 cause of cosmetic contact dermatitis.

3. Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) — An antioxidant preservative linked to endocrine disruption in animal studies. Found in moisturizers, lip products, and sunscreens.

4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) — Not the same as SLES. SLS is a harsher surfactant that strips your skin's natural barrier. If your face feels "tight" after cleansing, this is probably why.

5. Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs) — Used as thickeners and moisture carriers. The concern isn't PEGs themselves but their manufacturing byproducts (1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide), both classified as carcinogens.

The point isn't to panic. It's to know.

I built Lumens so you can scan any product and see exactly what you're putting on your skin — with plain-language breakdowns and safety ratings.

Stop trusting the front of the bottle. Read the back.
