Why most bass fishermen are throwing the wrong lures (and how to fix it)
Here's something I see constantly: guys buying the same 3 lures from the big box store, throwing them year-round, and wondering why the bite dies.
Bass behavior changes every month. Water temp, forage patterns, cover type — it all shifts. A crankbait that crushes in April is deadweight in August.
The fix is simple: match your tackle to what bass are actually eating right now.
Some quick seasonal rules I live by:
Pre-spawn (early spring): Jerkbaits and suspending crankbaits. Slow it down.
Spawn: Soft plastics on a Texas rig. Pitch to beds.
Summer: Deep-diving cranks, football jigs, drop shots. Go deeper.
Fall: Spinnerbaits and shallow squarebills. Follow the bait.
Winter: Blade baits, hair jigs, and patience.
I built LureKings because I got tired of guessing. Every month, we hand-pick lures that match what's actually working — not what's sitting on a shelf. If you're serious about putting more fish in the boat, this is the shortcut.
