3 lighting mistakes killing your product photos (and how to fix them)

If your product photos look "fine" but aren't converting, it's almost always lighting.

After shooting for dozens of perfume and skincare brands, these are the 3 mistakes I see constantly:

1. Flat front lighting

Most people blast light straight at the product. This kills dimension. Instead, try a single key light at 45° with a small reflector on the opposite side. Instant depth.

2. No backlight on glass/transparent products

Perfume bottles, serums, anything in glass — they look dead without backlight. Place a strip softbox directly behind the product and let the light pass through. Game changer.

3. Wrong color temperature for the mood

Warm tones = luxury, premium feel. Cool tones = clinical, tech. If you're shooting high-end fragrance with 6500K daylight, you're working against yourself. Dial it down to 3500-4000K.

These 3 fixes alone have helped my clients see 2-3x better engagement on their Instagram product posts.
