The €299 lesson that saved my first furniture business from folding

Three years ago I nearly closed my workshop because I was pricing furniture like a hobbyist, not a business.

Here's the mistake almost every new furniture maker makes: you cost out lumber, maybe hardware, and call it a quote. You forget your time, your tool wear, your finishing materials, your shop overhead, and — the big one — your design and iteration time. Then you wonder why you're working 70-hour weeks and barely covering rent on the shop.

The fix wasn't more woodworking skill. My joinery was already tight, my finishes were clean. The fix was treating furniture making like a craft and a business at the same time:

  • Cost every hour, not just every board foot. Your time in the shop is the most expensive material you use.

  • Price the design work separately from the build. Clients who want custom pieces are paying for your eye, not just your hands.

  • Never quote from memory. Build a real cost calculator — materials, hardware, finish, labor rate, overhead %, margin. Every project, every time.

  • Luxury pricing is a decision, not a negotiation. The moment you discount because a client hesitated, you've told them the first number wasn't real.

That single shift — treating the business side with the same precision as the joinery — is why I started Madgoat Furniture: a community for makers who want both. The craft (fundamentals through advanced furniture design and restoration) and the business (pricing, marketing, sales, multiple income streams) in one place, taught properly, not pieced together from scattered YouTube videos.

If you're a maker who's great with your hands but still guessing on the business side — that gap is costing you more than any tool upgrade would.
