Why word-of-mouth still beats every ad campaign for Icelandic small businesses
I've spent the last few months talking to tour operators, salon owners, and contractors around Iceland about how they actually get new customers. The answer almost every time: word of mouth and reviews — not ads.
The problem is that trust signals are scattered. A tour company might have 40 great reviews on Google, 15 on Facebook, and dozens of verbal recommendations that never get written down anywhere. Meanwhile their website — the one place a new customer actually lands — shows nothing.
A few things I've learned building in this space:
Reviews convert best when they're contextual. A rating badge in a header does less than a quote next to the specific service someone's looking at.
Response speed matters more than volume. Businesses that reply to reviews within 48 hours see noticeably more repeat bookings — customers notice someone's listening.
Asking at the right moment is everything. The best time to request a review is within an hour of the service being delivered, not days later in a generic email blast.
That's basically the whole thesis behind what I'm building with Ummæli — pulling Google, Facebook, and direct customer reviews into one fast embeddable widget so small businesses can put their best trust signal front and center without hiring a developer.
If you run a local business and have opinions on what's missing from review tools, I'd genuinely like to hear it.
