The #1 bracket mistake almost everyone makes with double-digit seeds
Every year, millions of brackets get wrecked by the same error: picking upsets based on "vibes" instead of matchup data.
Here's the fix — a quick filter you can apply to ANY double-digit seed before you pick them to win:
The Seed-Based Upset Rate check:
Not all double-digit seeds are equal. Historically, 10-11-12 seeds cover/upset at a meaningfully higher clip than 13-14-15-16 seeds — but the real signal isn't the seed number itself, it's the efficiency gap between the two teams. A 12-seed with a top-40 efficiency margin facing a shaky 5-seed is a live dog. A 12-seed that only "got hot in conference play" with a bottom-100 efficiency margin is a trap pick.
Quick test before you pick an upset:
Check the underdog's adjusted efficiency margin (offense minus defense, pace-adjusted) — is it actually in the same tier as the favorite, or 15-20+ spots worse?
Check pace — a fast, chaotic team facing a slow, grind-it-out favorite creates more variance (good for the underdog). Two similar-pace teams favor the "better" team more often.
Ask: is this upset pick based on a stat, or a name you recognize? If it's the latter, skip it.
Run every double-digit seed through that filter before your bracket locks. It won't make you right every time — nothing does in March — but it separates real live-dogs from public traps.
Good luck out there. 🏀
