3 things I wish I knew before trying to earn from home as a FIFO mum
My partner works FIFO. I'm solo parenting roughly half the year. I also work full time remotely.
When I started looking for ways to earn extra income on the side, I made every mistake going. Here's what I'd tell myself if I could go back:
1. It has to fit in the margins — not replace them.
I tried things that needed 2-hour blocks of uninterrupted focus. That doesn't exist when you've got a toddler and school pickup in 20 minutes. Whatever you do needs to work in pockets — 15 mins here, 30 mins there.
2. "Start small" isn't a weakness — it's the strategy.
I used to think I needed a huge launch, a perfect website, a full business plan. Nah. I started by sharing what I was already using and loving. That's it. The momentum built from there.
3. Community changes everything.
Doing it alone is hard. Having even a handful of people who get your life — the FIFO schedule, the solo parenting, the mental load — makes it 10x easier to keep going.
That's why I started this space. No fluff, no pressure. Just real talk from someone doing it in the margins.
If that sounds like your kind of thing, come join us.
