3 paid ad mistakes killing most B2B SaaS companies

After running campaigns for dozens of companies, the same three mistakes keep showing up:

1. Targeting too broad on day one

Most founders throw $5K at a wide audience and wonder why CAC is $400+. Start with a tight ICP — job title + company size + pain point. You can always expand once you find what converts.

2. Sending ad traffic to the homepage

Your homepage wasn't built to convert cold traffic. Build dedicated landing pages that match the exact promise in your ad. We've seen this alone cut CAC by 40%.

3. Ignoring the first 72 hours of data

The first 3 days of a campaign tell you everything. Most teams wait 2 weeks to "let it optimize." By then you've burned budget on a losing creative. Kill fast, scale what works.

Simple stuff, but most teams don't do it. If you're running paid for a SaaS product and want a second set of eyes, we do free strategy calls — no strings attached.

Solid post, but you're leaving a lot on the table.

A few things I'd add based on what I've seen working with

SaaS at scale:

On targeting:

Tight ICP is step one. But the real unlock is audience sequencing.

Most teams dump budget on cold traffic with direct CTAs. That's where your $400+ CAC comes from.

What works better: layered approach. Cold gets awareness content (no hard pitch). Then retarget based on engagement.

Save your conversion-focused ads for warm audiences who already know you.

I've seen this alone cut CAC by 50%+ before touching anything else.

On landing pages:

Dedicated LPs are a must, agreed. But the page is only half the equation.

What happens in the 3 minutes after someone hits that page?

  • Automated email sequence?

  • Retargeting pixel firing correctly?

  • Live chat with a custom script based on ad source?

Most teams build the LP and stop there. The real gains are in post-click orchestration.

On the 72-hour data:

Killing fast is smart. But what metrics are you actually watching?

CTR and CPC tell you almost nothing in B2B SaaS. The stuff that matters early:

  • Hook rate (first 3 seconds)

  • Time on page after click

  • Scroll depth

  • Micro-conversions (not just form fills)

If you're optimizing on surface metrics, you're making decisions blind.

One thing you didn't mention:

Creative volume.

"Kill fast, scale what works" only works if you have enough variations to test. Most teams run 2-3 creatives and wonder why they can't find winners.

The SaaS companies I've seen scale fastest are producing 30-50+ creative variations per month. Different angles, different hooks, different formats. Then the data actually means something.

Good framework overall. Just some layers to add if you want to push past the basics.

Happy to compare notes if you're down. And if you want, we can talk about it more in depth in private 🫡
