The 4-Part Template That Works for ANY PTE Describe Image Question

Most PTE candidates waste their 25 seconds of prep time panicking. Here's the framework I teach my medical English students — it works for every image type.

The Structure (memorize this):

Part

Purpose

Time

1. Overview sentence

What the image shows

~8 sec

2. Key feature #1

The most obvious trend or largest value

~8 sec

3. Key feature #2

A contrast, comparison, or second trend

~8 sec

4. Conclusion

Summary or notable observation

~6 sec

Total: ~30 seconds. That's your target.

The Universal Opening Formula:

"The [image type] illustrates/presents/compares [topic] between/from [time period or categories]."

Examples:

  • "The bar chart compares the number of hospital admissions across five departments in 2023."

  • "The line graph illustrates changes in patient recovery rates from January to December."

  • "The pie chart presents the distribution of healthcare funding across four categories."

Why this works:

The PTE algorithm scores you on fluency, pronunciation, and content. Templates solve the fluency problem — you're never searching for words because the structure is automatic. That frees your brain to focus on pronunciation and actually reading the data.

The #1 mistake I see:

Trying to describe EVERYTHING. You have 40 seconds to speak. Pick two features maximum. The scoring algorithm doesn't reward you for cramming in every data point — it rewards smooth, structured delivery.

Quick practice:

Next time you see any graph online — a stock chart, a COVID dashboard, a weather forecast — hit a timer and describe it using the 4-part structure above. Do 5 per day for a week and you'll feel the difference.
