3 things nobody tells beginners about learning mehndi
I've taught a lot of people to do henna, and almost everyone makes the same 3 mistakes when they start out. Sharing these because I wish someone told me this on day one:
1. You're gripping the cone too hard. Beginners squeeze like they're trying to kill the cone. The paste flows from gentle, consistent pressure — not force. Practice drawing a single continuous line on paper for 10 minutes before you touch skin. Sounds boring, it isn't optional.
2. You're trying to freehand a full bridal design on day 3. Every complex mehndi design is just 4 basic shapes repeated and connected: the paisley, the petal, the dot, and the vine line. Master those individually first. Once your hand knows them, full designs are just arranging shapes you already know.
3. You're judging your stain color too early. Henna paste looks orange when it comes off, and panics beginners. The real color develops over 24-48 hours as it oxidizes — don't wash your hands with soap right after, and don't judge the final result until day 2. Lemon-sugar sealant and keeping it on longer both help a ton.
If you're picking this up as a hobby or thinking about doing it for friends/family events, patience with the fundamentals pays off fast. Happy to answer questions if anyone's starting out.
