Cheap clients are a filter problem, not a personality problem

Most freelancers I talk to think they attract cheap clients because they are "bad at sales."

Usually it is simpler. They never wrote down what a better client looks like in numbers, so every inquiry gets a yes.

Two numbers from merone are enough:

  • Invoice size vs hours spent

  • Days to get paid

If someone is high hours, low cash, and slow to pay, that is not a relationship. That is a slot you can free.

This week, pick one client who fails both numbers. Do not fire them in a dramatic email. Just stop taking new work from them. Put those hours toward 10 people who already match a better pattern: they paid faster, they had repeating work, they did not need you to invent the brief.

You do not need 40 better clients. You need one replacement, then another.

If you want the four-step version of this (name the filter, find 10 names, write the short ask, swap one slot), it lives in Three Better Clients on merone.

Calendars are for meetings. Dockets are for work.

A calendar asks when you will do it. Most of the work that actually moves a freelance day does not have a when. It has a before.

Client follow-up. The invoice. The hour of deep work you keep sliding. None of that needs a 2:30 slot. It needs to be closed before midnight.

I run a docket instead:

  • Put the job on the list with a rough size. 30 minutes, an hour, three hours. Not a start time.

  • Do it on your time.

  • Close it before twelve.

If it is still open at night, that is the signal. Not a missed meeting. Unfinished work.

The docket is Before Midnight, free on merone.

The 10-minute freelancer money check

Most freelancers I know don't have a budget problem. They have a timing problem.

You get paid $2,400 on Thursday. By the following Wednesday it feels like it's gone, and you couldn't tell a client (or yourself) where it went.

Here's the check I run every Sunday. Ten minutes, phone calculator is fine:

  1. What actually hit the account this week? Not invoices. Deposits.

  2. What left? List it. Software, groceries, that "one" Uber.

  3. What's already promised next week? Rent, tax set-aside, a contractor.

  4. What's left after that? That's the only number that matters.

If step 4 is ugly, the fix is not a prettier spreadsheet. It's saying no for seven days, and moving the next invoice date up if you can.

Irregular income doesn't forgive "I'll log it later." Log it the day it moves.
