Why most local businesses are invisible on social media (and how to fix it)

I've worked with dozens of local business owners. The story is almost always the same:

They set up an Instagram page, post a few times, get little traction, and give up within 3 months.

Here's what's actually going wrong — and it's not what most people think.

The problem isn't effort. It's strategy.

Most local businesses post content that's designed for themselves, not their customers. They post things like "Happy Monday!", stock photos with generic captions, or promotional posts every week. None of this builds an audience.

What actually works:

  1. Show behind-the-scenes. People buy from people they know. A 30-second clip of your shop floor does more than any polished stock photo.

  1. Answer questions you get in-person. If customers ask you something face-to-face — that's your next post. You already know the answers.

  1. Hyper-local beats viral every time. A reel about a local event or street near you will outperform generic content 9 times out of 10.

  1. Consistency > perfection. 3 decent posts a week beats 1 perfect post. Volume builds trust.

The businesses that win on social aren't the ones with the best cameras. They're the ones who show up consistently and talk to their audience like humans.
