Why I built a media company around bugs nobody thinks about
Most nature content for kids goes straight to lions and dolphins. Nobody covers the water bear surviving in outer space, or the trap-jaw ant that can snap its jaws faster than a bullet. That gap is the whole idea behind Micro Tales.
A few things I've learned building content around 'the smallest characters':
Personality beats facts. Kids don't remember 'tardigrades survive extreme dehydration' — they remember 'the water bear that shut down its whole body to survive a trip to space and woke up fine.' Frame the science as a character arc.
Scale is the hook. Telling a kid 'this creature is 100x smaller than a grain of rice and still beat a survival record' does more than any nature-doc narration.
Parents are the real customer. They're searching for screen time that doesn't feel like junk food. Wholesome + educational + genuinely entertaining is a rare combo — that's the wedge.
If you're building content for families, the smallest, weirdest corners of any topic are usually the most under-covered. That's where the room to build a name for yourself is.
