I've coached dozens of runners through their first race. Almost everyone makes the same three mistakes early on.
1. Starting too fast
Your first few runs shouldn't feel hard. If you're gasping after 5 minutes, you're going too fast. The "talk test" is real — you should be able to hold a conversation while running. Slow down. You'll run longer and actually enjoy it.
2. Skipping rest days
Motivation is high in week 1. By week 3, your knees disagree. New runners need at least 2-3 rest days per week. Your body adapts on rest days, not on run days. More isn't always better.
3. No plan, no finish line
"I'll just run when I feel like it" works for about 10 days. A simple 3-day-a-week schedule with a gradual mileage increase is all you need. Structure beats motivation every time.
If you're training for your first 5K or 10K and want weekly guidance, gear reviews, and a community of runners in the same boat — Mile by Mile has you covered.
