Before you touch a single EQ or compressor, your gain staging needs to be right. Here are 3 mistakes I see constantly in bedroom studio mixes:

1. Recording too hot into the DAW

Clipping at the input stage can't be fixed later. Aim for peaks around -12dB to -18dB on individual tracks before any processing.

2. Slamming plugins with hot signals

Many plugins (especially analog-modeled ones) are calibrated for a certain input level. Feed them too hot and you get unintended saturation or distortion — not the 'warmth' you were going for.

3. No consistent reference level across tracks

If your vocal is at -6dB and your kick is at -20dB before you even start mixing, you're fighting your fader balance instead of your creative decisions. Stage everything to a consistent ballpark first.
