Why most e-commerce brands waste money on paid social (and the fix)

Ran ad accounts for a lot of e-commerce brands this year. The pattern that kills budgets almost every time isn't targeting or bidding — it's that the content and the funnel were never built to work together.

Most brands do this: hire a videographer for content, run ads through an agency, and have a totally separate person doing email/SMS. Three different people, zero shared data on what's actually converting. The ad account ends up optimizing for cheap clicks instead of the offer that prints revenue.

What actually moves the needle:

  • Content and ads have to be made by the same brain. The hooks that work organically are almost always the hooks that should be tested as ads first — you already have the engagement data before you spend a dollar.

  • Track revenue per creative, not CTR. A 1% CTR ad that converts at 8% beats a 4% CTR ad that converts at 1%, every time. Most dashboards default to showing you the wrong number.

  • The funnel after the click matters more than the ad. If your landing page loads slow or your checkout has friction, no amount of creative testing fixes that. Fix the leak before you pour more water in.

We run this as one system for e-commerce brands now — content, paid social, and the funnel, managed together instead of stitched from three vendors. Happy to break down a specific ad account or funnel if anyone wants a second pair of eyes — drop it below.
