5 things every toddler book needs (from someone who makes them)

I've been writing children's books for toddlers and here's what I've learned actually matters — not from a publishing textbook, but from watching 2-5 year olds flip through pages:

1. Repetition that doesn't annoy the parent. Kids want to hear the same phrase over and over. The trick is making it rhythmic enough that reading it 47 times at bedtime doesn't break you.

2. Characters that feel like friends. Not perfect heroes. Clumsy bunnies, shy stars, curious little moons. Kids remember characters who remind them of themselves.

3. Illustrations that leave room for imagination. You don't need to draw every detail. Leave space. Let them point and ask "what's that?" — that's where the magic happens.

4. Endings that feel safe. Toddlers need to know everything is going to be okay. The moon comes back. The lost toy is found. Home is warm.

5. A reason for the parent to care too. The best kids' books have a quiet layer that makes the grown-up pause. A line that hits different when you're the one reading it out loud.

That's the philosophy behind everything I create at Moonlit Pages. Stories for tiny humans that the big humans secretly love too. 🌙
