When I started painting nails, I dumped my first paycheck into a huge acrylic kit I barely touched for months. Here's what actually matters when you're starting out:

Skip the acrylic kit at first. Gel polish + a basic brush set will teach you 90% of what you need — line control, blending, and patience — for a fraction of the cost and mess.

Practice on a nail wheel, not your own hand. It sounds obvious but most beginners skip this. A $5 practice wheel saves you from re-doing your own manicure 20 times while you're just trying to get a straight line down.

Charge for your first sets — even if it's $10. Free work trains clients to expect free work forever, and it doesn't push you to actually finish on time. Small paid sets build the muscle of working under real (if low) pressure.

The skill that actually gets you booked isn't the fanciest 3D art — it's consistency. Clean cuticles, even coats, and lines that don't wobble will get you more repeat clients than one viral design ever will.
