The #1 Pacing Mistake That's Costing You Minutes in Every 10K

I've coached hundreds of 10K runners and the same mistake shows up in 90% of race results: the first mile is the fastest mile.

It feels right in the moment. The crowd is hyped, your legs feel fresh, your watch says you're crushing it. But here's what the data shows:

Runners who go out 15+ seconds faster than goal pace in Mile 1 slow down by an average of 25-40 seconds per mile by Mile 5. That's not a fade — that's a collapse.

The fix is counterintuitive: run your first mile as your slowest mile.

I call it the negative split pacing card. You build a mile-by-mile target sheet where each mile is slightly faster than the last. Mile 1 is deliberately 10-15 seconds slower than goal pace. Mile 6 is 10-15 seconds faster.

The math works out to the same finish time — but the FEELING is completely different. Instead of surviving the last two miles, you're hunting. You're passing people. You finish with a kick instead of a crawl.

Every 10K world record in the last 20 years has been run on an even or negative split. That's not coincidence — it's physiology.

If you want to learn how to build your own pacing card and train for it in 30 days, that's exactly what we do inside the cohort.
