The 5 KPIs Every Newsletter Creator Should Track Weekly (Most Ignore #4)

Most newsletter creators obsess over subscriber count.

It's the wrong metric.

Here are the 5 numbers that actually predict whether your newsletter becomes a business — or stays a hobby:

---

1. Open Rate

Anything below 35% means your subject lines aren't working, your list is unengaged, or both. Benchmark: 40%+. Fix it before you add more subscribers — you're paying for people who aren't reading.

2. Click Rate

Open rate is a vanity metric without this. Your click rate tells you if your content earns attention, not just your subject line. Benchmark: 3–5%. Below that, your CTAs are weak or your content isn't building enough desire before the ask.

3. Revenue Per Subscriber (RPS)

This is the one nobody talks about. Divide your monthly newsletter revenue by your total subscriber count. Benchmark: $1+ per subscriber per month. A list of 500 people at $2 RPS beats a list of 5,000 people at $0.10 RPS every time.

4. Subscriber Churn (Monthly)

You can be growing 500 subs a month and still be losing ground if you're churning 600. Track it. Fix it. Benchmark: under 2% monthly churn. Above 5%? Something is wrong with your content or onboarding.

5. Week-Over-Week Growth Rate

Not the raw number — the percentage. Are you growing 2–5% each week? That's the compound rate that turns a small newsletter into a massive one over 12 months. Flat growth means your acquisition channels are stale.

---

Track these weekly. Post them somewhere you'll see them. Let the numbers tell you what to fix next.
