The 3 metrics that actually predict newsletter revenue (most creators track the wrong ones)
Most newsletter creators obsess over open rates.
Open rate is a vanity metric. It tells you about deliverability and subject lines. It does not tell you whether you're building a business.
Here are the 3 metrics that actually matter:
---
1. Revenue Per Subscriber (RPS)
Formula: Monthly revenue ÷ total subscribers
Most creators don't calculate this. The ones who do are usually shocked by how low it is.
A healthy monetized newsletter should be doing $1–$5 RPS per month depending on niche. If you're under $0.50, your monetization model is broken — not your audience.
What moves RPS: sponsor deal quality, product mix, and average email-to-click rate on offers.
---
2. Sponsor Retention Rate
Formula: Sponsors who rebook ÷ total sponsors in last 90 days
One-and-done sponsors are a red flag. It means you're delivering volume but not results.
Creators running profitable newsletters have 60–80%+ rebook rates. Their sponsors come back because clicks convert. If yours aren't rebooking, your placement format, CTA structure, or audience-offer fit is off.
---
3. Net New Subscribers Per Dollar Spent
Formula: New subs from paid acquisition ÷ ad spend
If you're growing organically only, this doesn't apply yet. But the moment you spend on ads, you need this number.
Most creators don't track this and end up paying $3–8 per subscriber when top operators are at $0.50–$1.50. The difference is landing page conversion rate and referral amplification on top.

How to fix all three
Build a weekly KPI tracker — even a basic spreadsheet forces you to look at the numbers
Send a 90-day sponsor results email instead of a post-campaign wrap
Add a referral incentive to every welcome sequence
These are the foundations. Everything else is execution.
