I've built POS systems for small restaurants and retail shops for years. Here's what I keep seeing:
1. Real-time inventory sync
Most cheap POS systems batch-update inventory. By the time you check stock, it's already wrong. Your POS should update the second a sale happens.
2. Offline mode that actually works
Wifi goes down during dinner rush? You should still be able to ring up orders. Any POS that dies without internet is a liability.
3. Staff permissions that make sense
Your cashier shouldn't have the same access as your manager. Granular role controls prevent theft and mistakes.
4. Built-in reporting you'll actually read
If your reporting dashboard requires a PhD to understand, you'll never use it. Simple daily/weekly summaries > 50-tab spreadsheets.
5. Fast checkout
Every extra tap costs you money. The best POS systems get a sale done in under 3 taps.
I built Nextill POS around these exact principles. If you're running a shop or restaurant and want a system that doesn't fight you, check it out.
