3 things I wish someone told me before I started teaching karate to kids
I've been teaching karate for years, and moving it online was a completely different challenge.
Here's what actually works for beginners โ especially kids:
1. Technique before speed.
Most kids want to look cool fast. The ones who slow down and nail their stance first are the ones who actually progress. I make every new student hold their first stance for 60 seconds before we do anything else. Boring? Yes. Effective? Every time.
2. Consistency beats intensity.
3x per week for 20 minutes beats one 2-hour session on the weekend. Always. I've seen kids go from zero to their first belt test in 3 months just by showing up regularly.
3. Parents matter more than you think.
When parents are engaged โ even just watching โ students train harder and retain more. I always give parents a "watch for this" note each week.
If you've got a kid interested in karate, the bar for starting is lower than you think. A clear space, comfy clothes, and 20 minutes is all it takes.
