The folder structure mistake almost every new digital notebook owner makes
Bought a reMarkable, Supernote, or iPad for note-taking and now staring at an empty screen wondering how to organize it? Here's the mistake almost everyone makes in week one: they try to recreate their entire paper filing system on day one, end up with 40 empty folders, and abandon the device within a month.
The fix that actually works: start with 3 top-level folders max — something like "Active," "Reference," and "Archive" — and let subfolders emerge naturally as you actually create content. Don't pre-build a taxonomy for a life you haven't lived on the device yet.
A few other things that make a bigger difference than people expect:
Handwriting-to-text conversion is genuinely usable now on most devices — if you're not using it for meeting notes, you're leaving a lot of speed on the table.
Tags beat folders for anything that spans categories (e.g. a note that's both "work" and "ideas"). Folders are for storage, tags are for retrieval.
Sync your notebook to at least one other device in the first week. People who skip this step are the ones who quit — if notes only live on one device, you stop trusting the system.
We just built out a full beginner course walking through setup, organization, and daily workflows step by step (from unboxing to a real daily journaling + meeting notes system) — happy to share more details if anyone's interested. What device are you all using?
