The 80/20 rule that makes 'eating healthy' actually sustainable
Most people quit healthy eating because they treat it as all-or-nothing. Here's a mental model that fixes that:
The 80/20 Rule
Aim for 80% of your meals to be nutrient-dense (protein, veggies, whole grains, healthy fats) and let the other 20% be flexible — pizza, dessert, whatever you love.
Why this works better than "clean eating":
It's sustainable. Restriction-only diets fail because deprivation builds cravings that eventually cause binges. 20% flexibility removes the "forbidden fruit" effect.
It's forgiving. One indulgent meal doesn't "ruin" your day, because it was already part of the plan.
It's simple to track. You don't need to weigh food or count macros to eyeball roughly 4 in 5 meals being solid choices.
A quick way to apply it this week:
Look at your next 10 meals.
Mentally tag 8 of them as "build these around protein + veggies."
Let the other 2 be whatever you're craving, guilt-free.
The biggest lever in nutrition isn't perfection — it's consistency over months and years. 80/20 is how you actually get there.
