3 editing mistakes that kill your watch time
Most creators lose viewers in the first 10 seconds — and it's almost never a content problem. It's an editing problem.
Here are 3 things I fix for every client that instantly boost retention:
1. Dead air at the start. If your video has even 2 seconds of silence or "hey guys" before the hook, people scroll. Cut straight to the point. The intro comes after the hook.
2. No pattern interrupts. The human brain tunes out repetition. If you're just a talking head with no zoom-ins, b-roll, text, or sound effects for 30+ seconds, you're done. Break the visual pattern every 5-8 seconds.
3. Bad pacing on long-form. A 10-minute video doesn't need to feel like 10 minutes. Cut the filler, tighten the transitions, and use music to control energy. Your edit should breathe — fast when it needs to be, slow when it matters.
These aren't advanced techniques. They're fundamentals that separate amateur-looking content from stuff that actually gets recommended.
I run NY Studios — we handle all of this for YouTubers, gaming creators, and businesses. If you want someone to just handle your edits so you can focus on creating, check us out.
