5 Shopify mistakes killing your conversion rate (and how to fix them)

Most Shopify stores leave money on the table. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I see across hundreds of e-com brands:

1. Homepage hero image with no clear CTA. Your hero should do ONE job — get someone to scroll or click. Not "Welcome to our store."

2. Product pages with zero social proof above the fold. Star ratings, review count, and "X people bought this" badges need to be visible without scrolling.

3. Slow page speed from uncompressed images. If your Lighthouse score is under 70, you're losing 10-20% of mobile visitors before they see a product.

4. No urgency or scarcity signals. "Only 3 left in stock" and countdown timers work because humans are wired for loss aversion. Use them honestly.

5. Checkout friction. Guest checkout should be default. Every extra field is a lost sale. If you require account creation before purchase, you're bleeding money.

I run ONEBIGHOST LLC — we build and optimize Shopify stores for e-commerce brands that want to stop guessing and start converting. If any of these hit home, come check out what we do.
