Why most young soccer players plateau (and it's not their training)

I've coached players for years, and the pattern is always the same: kids grind on skills and fitness but completely ignore recovery and nutrition. Then they wonder why they gas out in the 70th minute or get hurt every preseason.

A few things that actually move the needle, in order of impact:

  1. Sleep before supplements. Most youth players are running on 6 hours during the season. No program fixes that.

  2. Carb timing around sessions, not just "eating healthy" in general. Fuel before, replenish after — that's the whole game.

  3. Strength work 2x/week minimum. Speed and agility drills are useless if the player can't absorb force. Most clubs skip this entirely.

  4. Track load, not just minutes. Two players can play the same 90 minutes and have completely different recovery needs.

The technical stuff (touch, vision, decision-making) is what gets players noticed. But the physical/nutritional foundation is what determines whether they're still performing at their best in April after a full season, or breaking down in February.

I put together structured training + nutrition coaching for players working on this exact gap — happy to answer questions here if anyone's stuck on programming or recovery for their kid or themselves.
