The 3 things every great thriller needs (and most authors get wrong)

I've read over 500 thrillers in the last decade. Written a few myself. And I keep seeing the same mistakes.

Here's what separates forgettable books from the ones that keep you up until 3AM:

1. The clock has to matter.

A ticking clock isn't just a trope — it's the engine. If your protagonist has all the time in the world, why should I keep reading? The best thrillers make you feel the seconds draining away.

2. The villain has to be right (at least a little).

One-dimensional bad guys are boring. The scariest antagonists are the ones who make you think "well... they have a point." That moral gray zone is where real tension lives.

3. Every chapter ending is a promise.

You don't need a cliffhanger on every page. But every chapter should leave the reader with one unanswered question they can't let go of.

I write thrillers that follow these rules obsessively. If you're the type who "just one more chapter"s your way through the night — PageVault is for you.
