Most people think the Secret Service just stands around in suits and sunglasses. The reality is way more intense.

Here are 5 things that surprised me while researching my book:

1. They started as counterfeit hunters. The Secret Service was created in 1865 to fight counterfeit currency — not to protect the president. Presidential protection didn't become their job until after McKinley's assassination in 1901.

2. Agents train for scenarios most people can't imagine. We're talking motorcade ambushes, chemical attacks, and crowd stampedes — all rehearsed in a secret facility most Americans don't even know exists.

3. The "kill zone" is a real thing. Agents mentally map out danger zones around the president at all times. Every room, every rooftop, every sightline is assessed in real-time.

4. They've prevented threats you never heard about. For obvious reasons, the most successful operations are the ones that never make the news.

5. The psychological toll is enormous. Agents describe the job as years of controlled paranoia. The burnout rate is one of the highest in federal law enforcement.
