Why most people describe wine wrong (and how to fix it in 10 minutes)

Most people say a wine is "good" or "not really my thing."

That's not a description. That's a gut reaction.

Here's the thing: wine tasting is a learnable skill — not a talent you're born with. And the gap between someone who can't describe wine at all and someone who can hold their own at a dinner or wine shop is smaller than you think.

The framework I teach beginners starts with 4 things your mouth already knows:

1. Sweetness — Is there any residual sugar, or is it dry?

2. Acidity — Does it make your mouth water? Does it feel crisp or flat?

3. Tannin — (Reds only) Does it feel grippy or drying on your gums?

4. Body — Think milk. Skim vs. whole vs. cream. Where does this wine land?

That's it. Before you ever get to fruit notes or terroir — just run those four checks every single time you taste.

Do it with 10 different wines and your palate will start calibrating faster than you expect.

This is exactly what we work through in Palate Academy — a beginner wine tasting course built for people who love wine and want to actually understand what they're drinking.

$19/month. New lessons monthly. Come learn with us. šŸ·
