Started a mobile detailing operation in Palo Alto and wanted to share why I think the drop-off model is dying for most families.
The math is simple: a typical detail shop visit costs you 2-3 hours of your day — drive there, wait, drive back, or Uber both ways. For a working parent in the Bay Area, that's the actual cost, not the $80-150 sticker price.
What changes with mobile:
• We show up at your driveway with water tanks + generator, no hose hookup needed
• Full interior + exterior detail takes 60-90 min while you work from home or run errands
• Recurring monthly service means your car never gets to the "embarrassing" stage — way less buildup to remove each time, which honestly makes the job faster for us too
The hardest part of building this hasn't been the detailing itself — it's routing. Palo Alto traffic patterns mean a driveway 2 miles away can cost you 20 minutes if you hit the wrong light on El Camino. If you're building a home-service business anywhere, solve your routing/scheduling problem before you scale headcount.
Happy to answer questions if anyone's thinking about starting a similar service in their area.
