5 things killing your small business's online presence (and what to do instead)
After working with 50+ businesses, we see the same mistakes over and over. Here's what's actually holding most small businesses back online:
1. No Google Business Profile (or a half-finished one)
This is free and it's the #1 thing that drives local traffic. If your hours, photos, and reviews aren't up to date, you're invisible to people searching for what you sell.
2. Posting on social media with no strategy
Posting 3 random photos a week isn't marketing. Every post should either educate, entertain, or sell. If you can't explain why you're posting something, don't post it.
3. A website that looks like it was built in 2015
If your site isn't mobile-friendly, loads slowly, or has no clear call to action — you're losing customers every single day. A clean, fast site with one clear next step converts better than a fancy one with 47 menu items.
4. Ignoring SEO completely
You don't need to be an SEO expert. But you need to answer the questions your customers are Googling. Write helpful content. Use the words your customers actually use. That's 80% of SEO right there.
5. No email list
Social media algorithms change. Email doesn't. Start collecting emails from day one, even if you only have 10 subscribers. That list is yours forever.
The businesses that win online aren't doing anything magical — they're just doing the basics consistently.
