The average high school senior applies to the same 20 scholarships their counselor printed on a handout. Those awards have thousands of applicants. That is a lottery, not a plan.

What actually converts:

Local first. Rotary, credit unions, churches, parent employers, community foundations. Ten applicants beats ten thousand.

Niche second. Intended major, county, first-gen, a sport, a parent’s union. The more specific the filter, the less competition.

National last. Use them as stretch shots after the easy money is in.

If you cannot name who funds the award and roughly how many people apply, it is usually a better target than anything you saw on TikTok.

Build a one-page profile (GPA, major, city, activities) before you search. Then search against that profile — not the other way around.
