5 things I wish someone told me before my first sewing project

I wasted so much fabric when I started sewing. Here's what would've saved me hours of frustration:

1. Iron your fabric before you cut. Wrinkled fabric = wonky cuts = a top that doesn't fit. 2 minutes of ironing saves you from starting over.

2. Use sharp scissors — and ONLY for fabric. Paper dulls fabric scissors fast. Get a cheap pair for paper and guard your good ones with your life.

3. Start with woven fabrics, not knits. Stretchy jersey looks easy but it's a nightmare for beginners. Cotton quilting fabric is forgiving, cheap, and everywhere.

4. Pin more than you think you need to. Seriously. Every 2-3 inches. Your seams will be straighter and your life will be easier.

5. Don't start with a dress. Start with a tote bag or a scrunchie. Flat, simple, no fitting involved. You'll learn your machine without the pressure of making something wearable.

Sewing is one of those skills that pays for itself — you start making things you'd normally buy, and eventually things you couldn't buy anywhere. It just takes a few small wins to get hooked.
