Why most cat toys end up under the couch in 5 minutes (and what actually keeps cats engaged)

If you've ever watched your cat sniff a new toy, bat it once, and walk away — you're not alone.

Most cat toys fail for one simple reason: they're too big, too complex, or too light. Cats are ambush predators. Their instinct is to stalk, pounce, and "kill." A toy that doesn't move right, or feels wrong in their paw, gets ignored immediately.

Here's what actually works:

Size matters. Cats prefer small prey. A toy that fits under their paw, that they can grab and kick — that's gold. Mini balls (golf ball size or smaller) are almost universally loved because they mimic the scale of what cats naturally hunt.

Texture and weight. Too light = no feedback. Too heavy = they can't move it. The sweet spot is something they can bat and watch roll unpredictably. Unpredictable movement triggers the chase reflex.

Scatter them. Don't put one toy down. Scatter 5-6 around the floor. Cats love "discovering" things. It keeps playtime feeling novel.

We built Pawball Co. around this exact insight — mini balls, right weight, right size, the colors cats actually respond to.

If your cat is bored, it's not their fault. It's the toy. 🐱
