Most bookkeepers doing payout/marketplace work are still tracking 1099-K thresholds and marketplace facilitator tax rules by memory or a messy spreadsheet. That's how you miss a filing deadline and lose a client's trust.
Here's the 3-number check I run on every client, every week, before anything else:
Gross payout volume this period — pulled straight from their processor dashboard, not estimated.
Running total vs. the 1099-K threshold for each platform they sell on (these thresholds are not the same across all platforms anymore — check each one individually).
Days since last reconciliation — if it's over 7, that's a red flag for the client relationship, not just the books.
If you're doing bookkeeping for creators, freelancers, or anyone getting paid through marketplaces/platforms, this 3-number check takes under 10 minutes and catches problems before they become a client's tax emergency.
Built a full SOP + weekly KPI dashboard around this exact workflow — happy to answer questions on payout tax bookkeeping in the comments if you're setting one up for your own clients.
