5 reasons freelancers don't get paid on time (and how to fix each one)
I've been helping freelancers fix their payment systems for a while now. Here are the 5 biggest reasons money gets stuck:
1. No clear payment terms upfront. Most freelancers start work before the client has agreed to when and how they'll pay. Fix: Send a one-page agreement before any work starts. Even a simple email works.
2. Invoicing too late. If you wait until the project is done to send an invoice, you've already lost leverage. Fix: Invoice at milestones or weekly — not at the end.
3. Making it hard to pay you. If your client has to figure out where to send money, they won't. Fix: Include a direct payment link on every invoice.
4. No follow-up system. Most freelancers send one invoice and hope. Fix: Automate 3-day, 7-day, and 14-day payment reminders.
5. Underpricing so clients don't take you seriously. If your rate is too low, clients subconsciously deprioritize your invoice. Fix: Raise your prices. Seriously.
