The 5 mistakes every beginner pianist makes (and how to fix them)

I've taught piano for years and these same 5 mistakes come up with almost every new student. If you're just starting out, save yourself months of frustration:

1. Tensing up your wrists. Your hands should float above the keys, not press down with force. Imagine holding a small ball — that's your natural hand position.

2. Skipping scales because they're "boring." Scales build muscle memory and finger independence. 5 minutes of scales before practice will 10x your progress.

3. Trying to learn both hands at once too early. Learn each hand separately first. Get comfortable. Then combine them slowly.

4. Picking songs that are way too hard. I know you want to play your favorite song, but starting with something 2 levels below your current ability builds confidence and technique faster.

5. Not using a metronome. Rhythm is everything. Start slow (like, painfully slow) and gradually speed up. Your future self will thank you.

If you're a complete beginner looking for structured lessons that actually work, check out my course — I walk you through everything step by step.
