Why your greens are slower after rainfall — and what most greenkeepers get wrong
Most greenkeepers blame the rain itself for slow greens. It's not the rain. It's what happens in the 6 hours after the rain stops.
Here's what's actually going on:
The surface moisture trap. After heavy rainfall, the top 2–3mm of your putting surface retains a disproportionate amount of water due to surface tension and organic matter absorption. This layer — not the root zone — is what kills stimpmeter readings. The root zone drains fine. The top doesn't.
What most courses do: Wait. Maybe give it a light roll the next morning. Then wonder why the greens feel sluggish for 48 hours.
What works instead:
Vibratory rolling within 90 minutes of rain stopping (not steel drum — you want vibration, not weight)
A light hand-drag across the surface if you have the staff — this breaks the surface tension layer mechanically
Targeted air injection at the 6-hour mark if you're dealing with compacted organic mat
The climate angle: This is getting worse. Warmer overnight temps mean your greens are staying wetter longer post-rain. The recovery window that worked 10 years ago is now too slow. You need to compress it.
Green speed is a discipline, not a condition. It's managed, not waited for.
