The #1 mistake I see in top-20 applications (and how to avoid it)

After reviewing hundreds of applications to schools like Stanford, MIT, and the Ivies, there's one pattern that kills more apps than bad grades or low test scores:

Writing a "resume essay."

Most students treat their personal statement like a highlight reel — listing achievements, awards, and extracurriculars in paragraph form. Admissions officers read thousands of these. They blur together.

The students who get in? They write about ONE specific moment, idea, or contradiction in their life that reveals how they think. Not what they've done — how they see the world.

Quick exercise: Think about the last time something genuinely surprised you or changed how you think about something. That's probably closer to your real essay topic than "the time I led my team to victory."

The best applications don't try to impress. They try to be honest.

If you're a junior or senior targeting top 20 schools and want 1-on-1 help building an application that actually stands out — that's exactly what I do at Pinnacle.
